What Computer to Buy?

Of course they are. If by "compatible with" you mean "Ubuntu can be
easily installed on." I have an Inspiron 6000 (no longer offered by
Dell, but it was new a bit over a year ago), and had no problems
installing Ubuntu then, and that was before even more improvements.

I hear good things about Thinkpads, though, and would suggest you at
least look into those (they tend to be a bit more expensive, but they
are very nice).
