mkinitrd does nothing

I built and installed a new kernel, and I want to build an initrd for it. So,
as a normal user, I run...

fakeroot mkinitrd -o initrd-2.6.17custom1.img 2.6.17custom1

No errors, zero return value. But, it produces nothing.

Help?

Mike
