Every 30 boots the system will automatically do a fsck on start-up. You
will then note there is a message saying:-
-x.x% non-contiguous files OK
-or something similar. This is the eqivalent of defragmentation, I
think. I have never seen my system get higher than 4.2%, and that was
after a lot of messing about with all sorts of files and installing and
uninstalling packages when using a test-bed partition I use just to
check out things like video drivers for ati which can mess things up
good and proper in some cases. My real working system never seems to
get much above 2%, and goes up and down a bit each time.
To force a check whenever you need type in a terminal:-
sudo shutdown -r -F now
and the system will restart and do a fsck so you can see what I mean.
PS The bootup will switch from the splash screen to a text boot after
about 20 seconds and you will see the progress of the file check, or at
least that is what happens in my case.
