Hi, I had a heck of a time getting Linux to run properly on my new Dell 5150.

I followed the instructions below and had success getting my new Dell with ATI
Radeon X600 recognized by X11 and OpenGL:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide
and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=143283&highlight=fixing+mesa+issue
and
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=200760&highlight=ati

Results:
-------
glxinfo | grep -i open
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)
OpenGL extensions:

and

glxgears
17238 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3447.508 FPS
17207 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3441.249 FPS

it is interesting to contrast this with the windoze installation which was
effortless. Yes, it was a *wonderful* learning experience <g>

thanks to all who helped
Ken
