First, let us know what "normal stuff" you did.

As far as I know, you can't write to an NTFS partition with Dapper "out
of the box" without adding some extra packages (CaptiveNTFS comes to
mind.) It won't matter if you are root or not.

If all you want to do is to READ an NTFS partition, then do a "sudo
chmod 0777" on your mount point (/media/winxp, maybe?) That should let
everybody read off of the NTFS partition.
