Tomcat would start

Your JAVA_HOME doesn't point to a JDK. I'm not sure if java-gcj pass as a
complete JDK. I would recommend to install sun's jdk (it's in multiverse)
and edit the file /etc/default/tomcat5 to setup the JAVA_HOME variable.
