Why does ppp keep committing suicide?

It happens whenever I go to answers.yahoo.com.  I get these messages in 
syslog:

Jul 14 13:02:56 localhost pppd[6610]: Starting link
Jul 14 13:02:56 localhost pppd[6610]: tcgetattr: No such device or 
address (line 917)
Jul 14 13:02:57 localhost pppd[6610]: tcsetattr: No such device or 
address (line 1011)
Jul 14 13:02:57 localhost pppd[6610]: Exit.
