Unfortunately, nearly 40% of that 180MB (71MB) is due to the
OpenOffice update addressed in USN-313-1[1].

You may choose to make a point of reading the USNs[2] to satisfy
yourself that updates are not being released simply "to keep it
bleeding edge."   The GIMP update is addressed in USN-312-1[3] and is
related to a security vulnerability.

The only solution to keeping the number of security updates to a
minimum after release is to get those issues reported in Malone[4]
previous to release.  A guide for how to do that is also available[5].
