You're doing it backwards.  Remove the vmlinuz files (preferably with your
apt tool of choice).  'aptitude search linux-image | grep -e "^i"' will
show you what images are installed.  Synaptic or adept are even easier.  If
you remove using apt, it will run update-grub, which will remove the images
from grub's menu.

Never?  Sure it would be useful for other things like standard boot options,
but it's never necessary for the purpose you want.
