Maybe the graphics drivers?

I just installed Google Earth to check this. Neither do I get the error
message nor do I see any slowness of the app.
I use kernel 2.6.15-26-686, but I doubt that 686 instead 386 is the key
difference wrt Google Earth.
I f I had to place my bet on something, it'd be the graphics drivers. Maybe GE
uses OpenGL functions which may be considerably slower with no hardware
acceleration available.
