is it possible to install dapper in text mode by using the live CD?

i installed the basic system by using the alternative CD
and want to install GUI
i tried
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems
but i don't have any NIC on this laptop!!!
is there anyway i can do that?
by the way, i also tried to upgrade it from 5.10. i followed
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DapperUpgrades
section "To install from a physical CD"
the commands are not working
any comments?
