Changeover from dialup to Road Runner problems.

I've just acquired Road Runner to replace my slowpoke dialup but now I'm 
not able to use Thunderbird and Firefox with ubuntu 5.10.  I presume 
it's because I need to do some more configuration to do a changeover 
from the old dial modem and get the correct account settings for 
incoming and outgoing mail.   Warner cable doesn't appear to support 
Road Runner in Linux.
Google can't find anything  related to this operation. but maybe I'm 
asking for the wrong thing..

I've heard that some ubuntu users do use Road Runner.  Can someone steer 
me in the right direction so I can attack internet with ubuntu?
