Although it doesn't have anything to do with your problem, I'd 
suggest to switch to dovecot as your IMAP server. Reason: It
supports maildir mailstorage and is thus quite somewhat faster
as uw-imap with mbox. Also, because of the mbox format, you're
more likely to risk losing *ALL* of the mails, if there's one
defect in the mbox file.
