Setting locale for individual programs

When i do:
$ LANG=us evolution

I get this:
(evolution-2.6:10524): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C
library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.

And evolution falls back to french (default locale now)
i tried LANG=en_US or LANG=en_EN or LANG="en_US" etc
