Dapper success stories

Hello list,

When I apt-get dist-upgraded from Breezy to Dapper, the poor badger
hurled up in a corner and cried - sound was broken, things were
inconveniencing me (that I won't go into here because this is not a
call for help) with the Desktop and eventually I left the bare minimum
of the remains of the box running as my SSH, FTP, Web and Samba server
(still can't get the MPD server 0.12svn [www.musicpd.org] to
co-operate with Alsa though).

And remotely as a server it still all works rather well.

Now, I clean-installed Dapper straight onto the hard disk of my
high-spec machine. I won't gloat, but.. 1.5 GB RAM, 120 GB hard disk,
AMD whatjimicallit processor (it's fast, but I've no idea what it is.
I'll check later) and a nice shiny black blue-lit case with 19" TFT
display, backended by an Inno3D nVidia 128 MB Geforce somethingy card.
(again, I'm not up on the geeky specs like I ought to be).

So I bit the bullet and installed Dapper from one of my newly received
Dapper CDs which I got in the post just recently. Interesting
approach, to just install from a running Live CD like that. No issues.

Reboot, and eject. And boot!

I had to change the GRUB menu.lst file to give me a nicer resolution
(vga=0x317) for the Splash, but all works brilliantly well. And that
new Human theme is rather nice. Finally I found this howto on the
Internet:

<http://www.davehayes.org/2006/05/22/howto-xgl-and-compiz-on-ubuntu-dapper-new-and-improved/>

...and I now have in my posession the ULTIMATE movie-OS desktop PC!
Look at how it swooshes and rotates! That's so fake. But I love it. We
now have a Desktop that resembles what Hollywood want it to, which is
interesting.

Before you know it we'll be doing: apt-get install ubuntu-voice-recog-desktop.

So, long story short, moral of the story, etc: I had scarred opinions
of Dapper after an upgrade from Breezy went not-so-well. But after
installing a fresh with nothing to break, it works like a charm.
Super-fast too (but that might have something to do with my stupid
amount of RAM!)

Has anybody else had that 'Oh wow - I know Ubuntu rocks, but THIS
ROCKS MY SOCKS' moment with Dapper?

Chris
