SI 7012 sound card recognised but not making sound.

This sounds very suspiciously like similar problems I had with my old
laptop's onboard sound which were fixed by messing around with various
binary switches in alsamixer. This time, however, I can't find any
combination of parameters that makes ALSA do anything. It recognises
what I have:

        $ cat /proc/asound/cards
        0 [SI7012 ]: ICH - SiS SI7012
                             SiS SI7012 with AD1888 at 0xe800, irq 177

As you can see, it spots the card, the type and the features, right down
to the memory block it uses and the IRQ (although that's a pretty odd
IRQ number). Further, sound applications all talk to it just fine.
They all seem to believe they're addressing a real sound card that's
present and working. The problem is that no sound ever comes out --
neither out the onboard speakers (tested under Windows, so I know they
work) nor out the plug-in jacks. Similarly no inbound sound is ever
received.

The laptop is a Haier H51 model, if that means anything. If anybody has
any other Mystic Incantations <tm> that offer up more information or a
solution to the problem (for my old laptop I had to put a command in
my .bashrc to get everything set the way it was needed to work) I'd
really appreciate hearing it.
