keeping users and passwords during a fresh install

I would like to make a fresh install of 6.06 over 5.10
with keeping all the users and passwords used.
I have the home directory on a different partition, so
it's not a problem to keep the datas, but I don't know
how to keep passwords and users.

Could someone help?
