vmware palyer hangs upon startup

I just installed vmware player using the command sudo aptitude install
vmware-player.
I start it using the Applications menu icon, it loads up and displays an
OPEN dialogue box. This is where it hangs, it should be dispaying the
contents of my home directory but it never gets this far and nothing
works. I left it about 30 minutes and it still hadn't changed. Does
anyone have an idea of  a solution?
