I know that gjots2 is an outline editor. There should be an kjots for KDE, IIRC.
Now, for mind mapping editors, there is kdissert for KDE
(http://freehackers.org/~tnagy/kdissert/), vym (http://www.insilmaril.de/vym/)
and Freemind (http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page).
There is a mind mapping editor for GNOME, but I can't recall its name.
