I have found the GParted partitioner as used in the installer to be of
limited use... OK when you want to install in a default Ext3 partition in
unallocated space, but not capable of installing a small Ext2 /boot
partition and a larger JFS / partition (to name an example).
But you can partition/format a disk manually any way you want with the
cfdisk/mkfs/mkswap utilities found on the liveCD *before* starting the
installer. When you then later do start the installer, you should choose
manual editing of the partition table, but only assign the mount points
AND check the reformat boxes. The installer will hang if you omit this
last duplicate step...
The RAM size should be OK.
