You know the thing is: you should probably be thanking not ubuntu people, but 
kernel programmers. 

Not that what ubuntu ppl did was at all easy (it is not! It's by all means 
great). But, to quote my friend Isaac, they "saw far, because the stand on 
the shoulders of giants". The giant in this case being, of course, the 
kernel.
