Sure, though I will have to wait a month before I can connect my
notebook to the internet and get the binaries. I'll try that too and
compare the speeds. And then there is also the option of prelinking
that Russell talked about.

Will do that too. Maybe not with Gentoo, but certainly with Fedora.
