changing the gnome start icon

Hello, 

I'm trying to do the same, try to change this 
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png. It doesn't
work for me but it seems like this should be  the icon gnome is using.
I think you have to remove the menu-bar and add it again in order to
see the new icon.

In gconf I didn't find the right option, the custon icon option doesn't
work because it doesn't apply to this object.
