First of all repositories can be enabled using synaptic, so the
terminal is not required to enable repositories. Many of us prefer
terminal as it is faster period...

We have to be careful in what is considered usable. For example vim has
a steep learning curve and is terminal based, but once time is invested
the benefit is gained of higher productivity.

What you started out using was considered to be the normal way to do
things, but if you started on GNU/Linux first then maybe you may find it
frustrating having to even pop a CD disc into the CDROM drive to
install something if you went to windows after say.

Don't be afraid of the terminal, its useful, very powerful!
