My Mac OS X machine is my "real" computer (i.e. the one where I do
real work, not play) so I'm loath to install software that is not
conventional OS X software (i.e. doesn't install itself out of Mac OS
X-sanctioned directories). I'm even hesitant to install Mac OS X
software that requires admin password access (other than official
updates).

Besides, if I need some form of software that hasn't had a package
prepared explicitly for OS X (with all dependencies included in the
package), then I can just connect to my YDL server or reboot the Mac
mini in Ubuntu and play.

That's not my concern -- I'm concerned about the longer term
implications of having software installed in non-standard locations.

Maybe I'll get up the courage (or let my guard down and allow
sponteneity to take over) to install darwinport. Though, any software
that I really need comes in OS X-native versions anyway and makes full
use of Aqua (or, has a CLUI interface that I can control with bash
scripts :-)).

Eric.
