Do a full/proper clean install - destroy the contents of the entire
disk drive.
E.g. when installing Ubuntu, use the 2nd virtual terminal to go into
bash. Remove all partitions. The use dd to destroy/format the contents
of the disk. e.g.
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda blocks=<number>
See manpage for dd for details.
This should ensure that not a single piece of software remains behind.
Then create the partitions and continue the installation.
