Like with many distributions, Ubuntu tries to catch all or most of
peoples needs within the core desktop package whether it be
ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop.

As it is a metapackage, it can safely go but any updates to the core
package will not occur on your box.
