I tried the following:

sudo mkdir /mnt/hfs
sudo mount -t hfsplus /dev/sdb3 /mnt/hfs

There wasn't anything that appeared on the desktop, but I was able to  
access the partition by going to "file system - mnt - hfs" and could  
access files. It would be nice with an icon on the desktop, but this  
is a start :-)
