The only time I've ever had problems with sound under Linux was when 
Creative Labs refused to release the midi chipset specifications for the 
Soundblaster Live! so that I had to use timidity to play midi files. 
They had some sort market driven justification for only supplying midi 
software for Windows for those cards.
