If I remember correctly, it's a replacement for "fam" (File Alteration
Monitor? ).  So I guess it helps to  update the state of files, avoiding
the need to constantly refresh, say, the nautilus view when files are
moved/deleted and so on.

Not sure this is exactly right, though. Perhaps someone who understands it
better can chip in with an explanation?
