Looks like I have a hardware problem then.  I'll go back to kernel 
2.4.10 and see if anything can be done with scsi emulation, just to be 
sure.

K3b recognises the drives and seems to write to them, as does Gnomebaker 
but neither produce disks with anything on.  XCdroast (for years my 
preferred burner) doesn't even recognise them.
