Networking not auto starting in Dapper

Hi, is anyone else having this problem? 

Whenever I boot Dapper the network does not auto start. ifconfig returns
nothing (i.e no messages)
If I do sudo /etc/init.d/networking  restart then the network works ok.
This behaviour occurs with both the following kernels.
    kernel 2.6.15-11-386 
    kernel 2.6.15-8-k7 

This only started in the last week.
