What do I have to do to get my sound back?

Ubuntu Users,

Despite working fine for many, many months, my USB sound device has
suddenly stopped working without any apparent cause. It also has not
come back into use despite a couple of attempts to repair it.
I am positive the hardware is working fine, because I can boot into
Windows and verify that all components are working as expected. So this
has to be a Linux settings issue.

I have modified my .asoundrc file to no effect. I have run
dpkg-reconfigure -a with no results.

I have two sound devices, as shown below. I want the Kenwood Audio
device to work again. What can I do to diagnose and repair the problem?

dave at ubuntu1:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
