There's an alternate post here about installing a Japanese IME. http://tinyurl.com/733mg It has worked for me in Firefox (and Evolution) though I haven't tried it in gedit or Xchat. It appears to be similar to the HOWTO you followed, though not exactly the same. Just FYI -- jyona
