accented characters in gnome terminal

I ripped a few cd's of music in Spanish and told Grip not to remove
the special/accented characters. When I browse in Nautilus the file
names have accents, while gnome-terminal shows a couple of question
marks (??) where the accents should be. What do I need to do for
gnome-terminal to display accents?

Also, how do I type these characters? I found details in character map
but can't figure out how to type them.
