Someone suggested using the binary from mozilla.com, bypassing the
ubuntu binary. It seems a bit peppier to me. Another alternative is to
use konqueror.

Agreed, they can be a bit pokey.

What problems are you having with skype? I've been using it on Ubuntu
for some time.
gnomemeeting is the 'standard' voip app. I've used it in the past.
