Confused about phpMyAdmin and MySQL password settings

I get this far, but only receive an error:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using
password: NO)

	It seems almost as if my MySQL server has a password set for root, even
though I don't remember ever setting one.

	Is there a way I can reset the installation with minimum hassle?
