Ok, I've got the same card in my Compaq nx9600. It looks lie you're on
the right track. Do you have little blue light showing that your radio
is on? Try running iwlist as root: sudo iwlist wlan0 scan. Also, note
that if your APs aren't broadcasting their SSID, you won't see them in
the list.
