Can anyone help a beginner ?

I'm trying to install some packages to get my geforce card working in 3d
mode and am a total novice. I was following the steps in the ubuntu help
files for hardware "How do I install the 3D Nvidia video card driver?"

I got up to "Install the nvidia-glx and nvidia-settings packages with
Synaptic 

          Miscellaneous - Graphical (restricted) > nvidia-glx "
(this seemed to work)

Then tried "Miscellaneous - Graphical (restricted) > nvidia-settings"
This failed!

When i use synaptic, i get what you see below.

I seem to have connectivity otherwise, but it's a pain. Strangely, this
was working the other day. I don't know if it's relevant but the ntp
server can't be found as ubuntu boots up either.

Can anyone tell me what's going wrong?
