Getting Firefox to behave like Galeon

After having some problems with galeon in dapper, I have decided it is
time to switch over to firefox once and for all. I can deal with most of
the firefox idiosyncrasies, but there is one that I must resolve.
I use multiple workspaces frequently to divide up my work. One
application that has a place in every workspace is my browser. I might
have gaim open on workspace 1 and evolution on workspace 2, and I need
to be able to open links from both of them.
What's more, I must have tabs in my browser windows. I can't deal with
lots of different firefox windows in my task bar.
therefore, when I click a link in an application, the logic I want to
happen is this:
if there is a browser window open on this workspace:
else:
open a browser window on this workspace
Galeon does this by default, but I haven't figured out how to make
firefox do this. Is there an about:config tweak or a plugin that will do
this for me?
thanks
mike
