[dapper] No free space on /boot, empty menu.lst

I just upgraded the kernel image in dapper, and on reboot was greeted
by the GRUB prompt. After a play with the Live CD, I found that my
/boot volume had run out of free space and the menu.lst.new hadn't
been copied over to menu.lst, resulting in an empty menu.lst. I
deleted a couple of files from /boot and copied menu.lst.new to
menu.lst and all is fine, aside from the new kernel not booting
(possibly due to lack of free space on /boot, missing files?)

If I remove the old kernel images from within synaptic does it remove
the (ir)relevant entries in /boot and free up some space?

On a side note I was browsing the forums and came across the thread on
the new "free space left" popups, and how to disable them. Seems I
should have been paying more attention to them afterall ;)
