Why is Dapper so CPU hungry?

Hi there.

I was using a customized (server) install of Dapper for a long time,
and I just wanted to test Flight 4. So, after a re-install, I had a
brand new Dapper again. :)

The good side: things work now, like Gnome-Power-Manager, that refused
to see that I had unplugged the power cable (it always shown that I
was on AC power).

The bad side: Xorg got CPU hungry. Even when doing nothing (except,
maybe, displaying the System Monitor), it goes to 50%-70% of CPU
usage. I had to change powernowd settings to only up CPU speed (its a
Pentium M, with scalling) when hitting 100%, or it would peg the CPU
at full scale all the time.

I can't see what could have change that. I tried to play with the
closed NVidia driver, only to find the system freezing hard when
unused for a some time or closing the lid (power-manager related,
maybe?).

So... I've run out of ideas. Anyone?
