Scanner Problems: Epson Perfection 3490

I have an Epson 3490 Photo USB Scanner that I am trying to get working.
I have done the following:

1. Edited the Snapscan.con and added the scanner.
2. Ran cabextract on the CD and go the firmware file. Placed in a
directory
3. Edited Snapscan.con to include the location of the firmware.

Kooka will ask if I want to use the scanner, but then be unable to
locate it with Sane. When I open Xsane I get the following error
message:

 Failed to open device 'snapscan:libusb:004:004'
Invalid Argument

At other times the number designation was 004:006 instead. I am really
at a loss. I am going to go back through this but I have been working on
this for quite some time. I am very much a noob, not quite two weeks out
of XP. I really love Ubuntu, but I am at a loss here. Any help would
certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gregg
