Can't mount my SATA drive

Mounting manually doesn't work
$ sudo mount ext3 /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

just gives up and shows me a usage page.

$ sudo fdisk -l

shows up everything but not the SATA drive.

ideas? Duncan
