So what's your loading like? One server we admin for a
school is a domain controller, mail server, SAMBA FILE
SERVER with ROAMING DESKTOPS, web server, print server,
and FILTERING web proxy. (Major loads in caps.) It
typically handles 180 workstations. Sometimes the CPU
is pegged, but then it's only a 1.13GHz P3. It runs
comfortably in 1GB of RAM. It has two swap partitions
for emergencies but doesn't really use them:

Cpu(s): 37.7% us, 28.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.4% id, 25.5% wa, 8.3% hi,
0.0% si
Mem: 1035596k total, 1017928k used, 17668k free, 133332k buffers
Swap: 2104496k total, 208k used, 2104288k free, 638296k cached

I don't doubt that there are application loads which warrant
4GB RAM or more. However, it's not immediately apparent from
the list you gave.
