Remove icon from desktop

Yes, all removeable media are mounted under /media. So if you put your
local drives under /media, they will show up on the desktop.

Have you tried, as suggested, to mount your hard drives under /mnt ?  Do
they still show up on the desktop when the Gconf key is enabled ?
