email client problems

Linux ubuntu 2.6.12-10-386

I ve re installed linux after a few years of break.Im really trying to
get away from windows, I even bought a Mac :-/

now i ve got several problems..like in the old days

one of them is that email clients like kmail and evolution wont get to
my POP server. in this case Im using pop.gmail.com as server. the only
client that works so far seems to be the built in one in Opera web
browser.

In evolution theres no error message, it just hangs.
In Kmail I get an error message> could not start process pop3

configuration wise Im using gmails how to, dont think thats the problem.

I can ping the server>

SMTP to works fine on Kmail and Evolution.

I cant see any error messages in any of the logs so Im at loss at what
to do now.

any ideas?
