Astronomie.de seems to be for KDE, not GNOME. KDE and GNOME are two
graphical desktop environments which you can choose from (there are
others too). GNOME is the default environment for Ubuntu. It seems that
Astronomie.de only works with rather old versions of KDE (1.x - KDE is
going at 3.5.x now).
You could possibly crab the background image used in Astronomie.de, but
you can also download any astronomy image from the internet and use it
instead (I don't know if any image format goes, but at least JPEGs and
PNGs will do). You can change your desktop background from System ->
Settings -> Desktop background.
