(Dapper) Confusion = hybrid GNOME & KDE

Ok, is Canonical experimenting with a hybrid GNOME/KDE monster?

At the moment (Dapper/Ubuntu 6.04) I'm logged into what is ostensibly
a GNOME session with the GNOME application menu on the top of the
screen (e.g. under System I see About GNOME).

However, if I open up a folder on the desktop Konqueror pops up. At
the bottom of the screen I see the Kubuntu KDE menu, and, if I click
on the K icon I see kubuntu 5.10 written vertically (before I upgrade
my Ubuntu 5.10 to 6.04 I installed Kubuntu just to see what it was
like).

Oh, PS, KDM (or whatever it's called) is now in charge of my login (I
guess at one point I replaced gdm).

Anyway, any guesses as to what's going on? Typical development
breakage or is Canonical going for something new and exciting?

I do prefer the GNOME applications so I'd prefer to be in a GNOME-only
(well, to be honest it's just Konqueror that I really really don't
like... otherwise KDE isn't a bad environment (other than the kCrap
naming convention)).

Eric.
