OT: ATA and SATA hdd's

Before I go out and buy an new extra harddrive I just wanted to chekc this.

I have a 160GB ATA drive (master) and want to buy a 300 GB drive. I have
two SATA plugs on my motherboard, so I'm thinking the new drive should
use SATA. Will that be a problem in any way? Can I use one of each? Will
*nix see them okay etc etc.

I'd love a quick bit of advice, maybe someone has tried this before.
